The Importance of GHS or Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals

The basic system of outlaying all standards, harmonizing the classification and labelling of chemicals is called GHS or Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. Outlayed in this very logical comprehensive system are the definition of the environmental, physical, and health hazards done by chemicals, and the creation in classifying processes to match it with the hazard criteria with the help of the data of chemicals. The many safety measures that should be taken on labels and safety data sheets or permit-required confined spaces are also incorporated in the GHS.

Each country and its economy rely on the production and usage of chemicals among other things. In the US alone, there is a $450 billion business of chemicals and its export worth more than $80 billion every year. It is a fact that chemicals influence our lives from our health and lifestyle to every person and the whole nation. The usage of chemicals led to the development of wise regulations in the sectors of transport, agriculture, trade and so on.

GHS then plays a very important role in setting up these safety guidelines that will enable production, transportation and consumption of energy in the proper manner, that will also lead to good health and ambiance.

Guidelines are set by GHS that will identify the chemical hazards and leading to the precautions that should be taken by those who could be exposed to the chemicals. People who could fall into chemical hazards exposure are the general public, workers, emergency responders and consumers. The classification and labelling processes can either be present in the national or international levels.

The definitions of hazard and label information among several regulatory agencies are the outcome of the implementation of the GHS, and this led to the improvement of human health and convenient international trading.

Note that if a company gets negative remarks from GHS, it will be penalized severely and thus has to produce chemicals that are good for the people.Go to http://hfm.wikia.com/wiki/File:Confined_Space_Entry to learn more.

The GHS was created by the United Nations that is meant to create a uniform system in classifying, labelling of chemicals and also in the use, storage, transport and handling of these chemicals in a safe way. To ensure consistency in the implementation and for greater human life and environment safety, all countries are abound to implement these methods.

Each country is still left to implement the GHS, and it could either implement the recommendations in full, or blend them partially with their own regulations. Some countries have implemented in full the GHS while others have not yet adopted it, but in most likely all will do so in the future.

At the heart of GHS implementation is the GHS safety data sheets - SDS, wherein each manufacturer has to have this safety data sheet that should be handled by knowledgeable professionals.
